There’s an apocryphal story often shared about John D. Rockefeller’s response to a reporter when he was asked, “How much money is enough?” He replied, “A little bit more.” Though there is no proof that conversation transpired, the truth it captures has allowed it to remain in circulation for decades. If we’re honest, we are rarely satisfied with what we have been given.

Last night our community group met to discuss 1 Peter and we were asked whether we struggled more with envy or hypocrisy. From time to time, I’m sure we struggle with both, but in a social media world, I definitely struggle with envy on a more regular basis. I wish I could write better like he does, I wish I could speak better like he does, I wish I had a nice car like he does, I wish, I wish, I wish…

How hard it is for us to be a people marked by gratitude for all we do have, rather than grumblers wishing we had something more. But, one of our leaders reminded me that this desire that seems to mark so many people in our world may be a powerful argument for the existence of God. If we always want more, and if getting more doesn’t ever result in lasting satisfaction, than our needs can only be met by an infinite God. With Him we will always have more to learn, more to enjoy, more to discover, more to delight in, more to praise. We have an unending desire for more, that can truly only be met by the unending God who made us for himself.
